From ’60s Supermodel to 76 — See Twiggy Today

Posted on February 28, 2026 By admin

Reluctantly stepping into fashion history, Twiggy’s iconic pixie cut became one of the most recognizable hairstyles of the 1960s. The elfin face, wide blue eyes, and androgynous crop defined the Swinging Sixties — but it wasn’t even a look she wanted. Born Lesley Hornby, Twiggy was just a shy teenager hoping to launch her modeling career in 1966. At 5-foot-6, she was told she was too short for the industry. During a visit to London’s House of Leonard salon, famed stylist Leonard of Mayfair asked to try his new cropped haircut on her.

Though unsure, Twiggy felt too intimidated in the posh salon to refuse. She returned the next day and spent seven hours cutting, coloring, and reshaping her hair. The result? A bold blonde pixie that changed everything. Photographer Barry Lategan captured the look, and when a Daily Express fashion editor saw the photos, Twiggy was soon featured as “The Face of ’66.” Her dramatic lashes — inspired by a childhood rag doll — became part of her signature style.

Within weeks, she was shooting for Vogue and her career skyrocketed. Twiggy quickly became the face of mod fashion, worked alongside designer Mary Quant, and even inspired a Twiggy Barbie. She retired from modeling in 1970 but found success in film, music, and fashion design.

Now in her late 70s, Twiggy remains active with her podcast Tea with Twiggy and continues working with major brands. Despite her global fame, she says her greatest achievement is her close bond with her daughter, Carly. From reluctant haircut to cultural icon, Twiggy’s look — and legacy — remain timeless.
