A Christmas night meant for family and celebration turned tragic in Hartford, Connecticut, when 14-year-old Malachi James was killed in a hit-and-run crash. The incident occurred around 9:18 p.m. as he rode with family members along Cornwall Street.
A Tesla Cybertruck traveling in the opposite direction collided with their vehicle, a Toyota Camry. Malachi was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries, leaving his family and community in shock.
The driver of the Cybertruck fled the scene on foot, leaving behind devastation and unanswered questions. Police later confirmed they have spoken with the vehicle’s owner, but do not believe that person was driving at the time. The truck had not been reported stolen.
Authorities say speed may have been a factor, though it remains unclear whether alcohol was involved. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
Malachi’s family described him as a bright, kind-hearted teenager with limitless potential. His uncle, Spenser McGhee, said Malachi had dreams of making a difference, whether through music, public service, or another path he had yet to discover.
